The Army's needed a large multiple engine bomber so the B-17 was born. This aircraft was made entirely by Boeing and was drawn up and manufactured in less than a year. The B-17 was also called a Flying Fortress because of its firepower and durability, this was also the first plane with a flight deck instead of open cockpit design. In a ten year span they made a total of 12,732 B-17's, and out of the aircraft's made 4,735 were lost. Today though there are less than 100 air frames that still exist and many cannot fly any more, there are about 15 that are flyable.
